Our Creative Director writes “My Beautiful East Africa”

Beautiful day.

Hope you had a great weekend?

This week we feature an article written by our creative director “My Beautiful East Africa”

The beautiful East African region comprises the unique countries of Burundi, Comoros Island, Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Seychelles, Somalia, Southern Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania and Uganda.

Let’s explore this beautiful E.A.S.T African region together:

FFX_0227FFX_0240 FFX_0239

E – Economic

A – Ambience

S – Social

T – Technology

ECONOMIC

Our East African countries grew at an estimated average real GDP of 5.36% in 2014, significantly higher than the global average of 3.3%. What’s more, the region is projected to grow at 5.4% in 2015, a clear testament of its economic potentials.

Ethiopia saw double digit growth rate of 10.3% in 2014 and is ranked one of the 5 fastest growing economies in the world. The region’s revenue is generated from agriculture, wholesale and retail trade, tourism and manufacturing amongst others.

AMBIENCE

East Africa is a beautiful region with breath taking mountains and lakes; it has the two tallest peak mountains in Africa: Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Kenya. Also, the region hosts the world’s second largest freshwater lake (Victoria), and the world’s second deepest lake (Tanganyika).

The presence of islands like Zanzibar and Seychelles adds to its tourism potentials; and, with the exotic range of wild animals, the region is simply irresistible to anyone serious about tourism.

Did I forget to mention that the temperature in the region is perfect and usually ranges between 15°c to 29°c? I totally recommend East African cities for holiday trips!!

Zanzibar

                                                                       Zanzibar

SOCIAL

There are many social and cultural activities in this region as well as theatrical spots including animal/marine parks, museums, art galleries, musical concerts, and other performing arts.

A wide range of delicacies can be eaten in East Africa from Ugali, a popular starchy dish which can be eaten with vegetables, to Cambuulo, which is made from Azuki beans and can take up to 5 hours to prepare! The more western folks might like Kuku Paka which is a delicious blend of chicken coconut curry served with rice.

Swahili is the most common language in this region and may soon become the official language of the East African Community (EAC). English is widely spoken around the region and French is used in some countries.

Kuku Paka dish

                                                                       Kuku Paka dish

TECHNOLOGY

Like no other region in Africa, the Eastern countries are leveraging technology to grow. Nairobi was recently announced the “smartest” city in Africa and Rwanda is gearing up to produce the next city.

Almost 74 percent of Kenyans now have mobile phones and the mobile penetration rate in Rwanda is now 73 percent. Mobile phones are not just used for calls; they are also used for making payments. In Kenya and Tanzania, for example, over 60 percent of the population engages in some form of mobile payments to acquire goods and services.

East Africa is described as a hi-tech region with many emerging technology hubs from iHub in Nairobi to Hiveco Lab in Uganda and kLab in Rwanda to many others.

Mobile money usage in East Africa

If you ever have to make a tourism decision in Africa, you definitely want to consider this region as part of your options

Hope you enjoyed the read? Please share your best part of my our beautiful East Africa and your experience too, with pictures.

I had the opportunity to visit Nairobi, Kenya last year and had a pleasant experience!!  You can read articles on my visit to Nairobi:

Emmanuela in pink apronEmmanuella in pink apron 3
Let’s meet you

I am Emmanuella Uuijiatalor. I love cooking, baking, meeting people and  listening to music. I am extrinsic in nature. I am working towards building a career in Culinary Art (Chef). Most importantly i love God.

The richness of our culture. I value our vast natural resources and the strength we exhibit as Africans. In times of difficulties we still find a way to live and survive against all odds.

Harare, which is the capital of Zimbabwe. I had always wanted to travel to zimbabwe not minding their state of political and economic crisis. I always wanted to visit this beautiful city and their resort centres like The Lion and Cheetah Park, Thetford Game Reserve Harare. I watched a movie some years back that portrayed their culture and it showcased the beauty and richness of Zimbabwean culture.
Zimbabwe wild life
Who is my African Icon and why?
Hmmm, a difficult choice to make. As a graduate from the school of Human resource, Languages precisely, i fell in love with a few writers. Amongst them is an outstanding writer of our time whose works speaks for her anywhere in the world, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.
Chimamanda
I admire her smart and flawless work of Literature. I describe her as one who thinks before she writes.

A more safe, clean and serene environment with our natural resources intact and properly utilized, A place to still call home with a more stable economy
How would you colour Africa and what do the colours represent?
I would colour my Africa Green, White and Yellow.

Which B&G product(s) do you like the most & what makes it/ them unique?
For some amazing reasons I love the Aprons! I am proud of who I am and where I am from and what is associated with my culture. I think it is a great idea to have something from one of our famous materials in Africa “ankara”, with colours and big pocket (i love the pocket area the most). It is different from the conventional aprons we see around. It adds beauty and makes cooking more fun too.

We were featured by Mara Mentor on BusinessDay!!!

Beautiful day!!!

This week we feature the interview of Belle&Grace’s  CEO by Mara Mentor published on Business Day newspaper  of Monday, 6th July, 2015 pg 36

B&G feature3

Why mentoring is critical in business

What is the best way to transition from a regular 8-5 job to the lifestyle of an entrepreneur? Perhaps, there is a one size fits all strategy? But are you bold enough to take the plunge? What is holding you back? Fear? Failure? Uncertainty? These and more make up challenges that limit aspiring entrepreneurs.

The fear of failure, change, or uncertainty holds back thousands of people from pursuing their dreams. Indeed, most end up living a life of “what ifs”. But, one way out of this perplexity might be mentorship.

Overtime, business mentorship has arguably proven to help shape ideas of young people into viable businesses (or direct them away from entrepreneurship, into more lucrative career paths, as it has been proven that entrepreneurship is not for everybody). However, some young Nigerians have been able to dig deep, persevere and innovate with little or no guidance to building thriving businesses.

One of such young Nigerians is Esther Toluwase, a mentee on Mara Mentor and CEO of Belle & Grace. An experienced management consultant, Esther doubles as ‘Chief Creative Officer’ of Belle & Grace, a uniquely African fashion brand that promotes Africa’s beauty in our everyday lives. She shares her story on transition from employee to business owner and the challenges of building a business in Nigeria.

IMG_0142

What triggered you to take the leap – start your own business?

Belle & Grace evolved from my search for an apron and my inability to find any good quality one. So I decided to design one with an African prints. I simply took a picture using it in my kitchen and when I shared it lots of friends were interested so I decided to make it a commercial product. Over the years, we have expanded from aprons to apparels and accessories.  B& G provides a platform for me to promote Africa’s beauty; I believe so much in Africa and its potentials and want to be instrumental in fostering its growth and development so one of the media is my business Belle & Grace.

What where the immediate challenges you faced as a start-up and how did you overcome them?

At the beginning it was getting the right team members; it was not easy getting good designers that could make the standard I wanted for Belle & Grace. Overcoming this challenge is a continuous process of sourcing for good designers, testing them and directing in line with our standards. Currently, we have found some awesome designers that work with us and we are growing together.

Also, the infrastructural gap in the country posed a challenge especially the power situation but we are learning to work effectively with the limitations; so at some point we got the stove iron to ensure we still delivered neat items when there is no power.  Overall, I believe that with hardwork and perseverance every business can thrive above the challenges.

How would you describe your business?  Do you still work to support it?

Belle & Grace is an African fashion and social enterprise, our mission is to promote Africa’s beauty through our fashion & home accessories. All our products (aprons, tops, neckpieces and pocket squares) are beautifully made with African prints by Africans! Every week we get our clients to bring out the beauty in Africa through our #ColourMyAfrica social initiative.

Last year I took time off paid employment to work on some community based projects and grow B&G.

How do you deal with competition, marketing, quality assurance, customer satisfaction, etc.?

We learn from competition, it actually makes us stronger, the business environment is evolving so much that your competitors can be your growth collaborators and the market is big enough for us all!

Social media platforms has transformed the business marketing model, B&G utilizes these platforms like Facebook, Instagram, twitter and we have had clients contact us based on this tool. It’s definitely a low cost efficient marketing tool. Highly recommended for startups!

Quality assurance is developed through the entire value chain from our supplier sourcing to the final delivery. We source for high quality African prints which we use even though they are more expensive, our designers know that we do not joke with quality in our production and we use a reputable delivery agency for outbound logistics. Proper management of the value chain is essential and that’s my role.

Customer satisfaction is key for B&G and other companies especially startups. We work towards exceeding our client’s expectation.  So I frequently ask myself how we can deliver more than what was requested. Also for us getting feedback is key and we learn from them.

What role has mentorship played in your business growth?

I have always had informal mentors since my secondary school and university days. Mentoring has definitely helped us in our business growth, one of my mentors Steve Harris once said “Experience is a good teacher but other people’s experience is a less expensive way to learn”. Before we launch a new product, we share the idea with one of our mentors who reviews it comprehensively and critically for areas of improvements. This definitely helps us to ‘go to market’ stronger. Another mentor guided and advised me to try a trusted delivery agency when our delivery was not running efficiently. The role of mentoring in business cannot be overemphasized and Mara Mentor is definitely helping to bridge the gap between young entrepreneurs and business leaders who have immense experience in the business world.

For more inspiring stories and resources on entrepreneurship, join the largest entrepreneurship community in Nigeria on www.mentor.mara.com or download the Mara Mentor app on Android, Apple, Blackberry, and Nokia stores. For inquiries, email: support@mentor.mara.com

We definitely recommend the Mara Mentor platform!!!

Have a fruitful week.

ColourMyAfrica features Mimi!!!

Hello!!! Hope the weekend was great? Did you get to watch any tv show during the weekend? On ColourMyAfrica, this week we feature a lovely young lady, TV host and presenter Mimi!!!Mimi (Green Apron) Fridge                                                                    Mimi using our B&G fruitful apron

Let’s meet you

My name is Omowunmi Onalaja; most people simply refer to me as Mimi. I’m a short lived HR consultant turned TV presenter/Host and Actress. I’m a happy go lucky girl (most of the time) who truly believes that life can be as colourful as a rainbow, if we just let it!

What makes you a proud African?

What makes me a proud African is my positive and hopeful outlook on life.I believe Africans are some of the happiest people on earth even in the face of seemingly unfavourable odds. I tell myself all the time “Keep Hope Alive Always“, and I believe we as Africans do this every single day.

What is your favourite city in Africa (you may not have visited it yet!)

Hmmm…it’s so hard to decide! I’ve recently been told about the city of Capetown in detail and it truly sounds awesome! Zanzibar definitely has to make my list as well; It’s a gorgeous location that can rival a lot of well known vacation destinations around the world. Though I haven’t been to these two places yet, pictures don’t lie. I can’t wait to visit! CapeTown (Beautiful)Zanzibar

CapeTown                                                                          Zanzibar

What is your favourite African TV show and why?

Another difficult choice! I’m a huge supporter of African television and 90% of my TV time is dedicated to homegrown entertainment. I apologize, but I can’t pick one. My best African TV shows will have to be the drama series “Before 30” and “Desperate Housewives”, as well as a bunch of shows on EbonylifeTV, particularly “ELNow”, “The Spot”, “Moments”, “EL Reports”, “VVIP Events” and a brand new game show called “Play2Win” which I happen to host 😀 I know I know, this is beginning to sound like an ad but I can’t help it

!   Mimi OnalajaMimi presentingMimi Presenting

Mimi at various presentation sessions

Describe your Africa in 10 years?

My Africa in 10 years is one where we all know and practice the true meaning of unity and oneness, an Africa with an enabling environment to foster development, one that is able to effectively utilize the material and intellectual resources that abound on the continent

How would you colour Africa and what do(es) the colour(s) represent?

I’d colour Africa pink in a heartbeat! It’s my favourite colour so it’s such an easy choice. Pink is bright and represents to me a world of ease! I’d also colour Africa Orange and Green; Orange because I see the colour and I think endless opportunities, and green because it’s such a symbol of hope, fertility and growth, everything I want for Africa Pink, Green & Orange (Mimi) Which B&G product(s) do you like the most & what makes it/ them unique?

The Aprons! It’s such a genius idea to make Ankara infused aprons in so many bright colors and patterns and I definitely saw them at B&G first! Mimi (B&G apron)Regards, Omowunmi ‘Mimi’ Onalaja
